How do you cure a dog’s fear of one person?

My dog loves everything. Birds, squirrels, little dogs, big dogs. He loves everyone he has ever met, including children–except for one guy. I have one friend that he seems to be afraid of. When we get together, he tucks his tail and barks incessantly. He is usually only bothered if my friend is standing too close, within 5 feet or so. This guy has no unusual characteristics. He is always completely calm, even when Lucky is barking. He has pets of his own at home. Lucky usually loves that–he’ll sniff your clothes until you make him stop. My dog is not aggressive towards him, and has even timidly licked my friend’s hand. We are mystified as to his reasons for being afraid, and not sure how to handle it. (Friend was slipping him hot dogs to try to win Lucky over, but I put a stop to that when I found out.) Any suggestions?

Let the friend slip him hot dogs. And cheese, or the dog’s favorite treat.

Bribery is the best way to win a dog over.

Also, have the friend ignore the dog. The temptation is to have him be super sweet to the dog, but that sort of “charges up” the situation. It’s better to let the dog have space and time to deal.

Something about him freaks the dog out. It’s no big deal, he will probably outgrow it.
