How do I train my dog not to eat my rabbits?!?
My dog always wants to chase my rabbits and eat them! And because of this, we had to move our rabbits to the garage. And it’s SWELTERING heat inside our garage and I don’t want my rabbits to get heat stroke! So unless I get my dog to coexist peacefully with my rabbits, I’m afraid my rabbits may get heatstroke.
What my dog does is he tries to catch the rabbits in his mouth, or he runs around and around their cage trying to find a way to get in. I absolutely positively know that if he gets a chance to touch them, he’ll crush them to pieces. And I don’t want to use an electric collar!!!!
By the way, he’s a big black labrador retriever.
And I’m also not getting rid of either of them.
I, very much, admire your dedication and hope it pays off, but you have to be realistic too. As much as you don’t want to rehome either, you can’t sacrifice their well being. Hopefully, it won’t come to that, but if that’s the only option to keep them safe/happy…you know? Please get the rabbits out of the hot garage…move them indoors, at least, for now.
His prey drive sounds pretty strong…not surprising for his breed. Is he neutered? Any obedience training? If not, work on those. Work with him on lead, giving a command to “sit” or “down” when he starts the behavior. Whenever he sits or downs (depending on which you chose) and remains calm (even for a second), reward like crazy. Slowly build the time up and eventually work up to off lead, definitely don’t rush it. Most important: You need to be consistent and reward (praise, food or toys…whatever he ‘works’ for). However, keep in mind, breed traits are just that…you can work with/around them, but not eliminate them completely. I like the fence idea, because you should never trust him unsupervised. BTW, you can also practice “Nothing in Life is Free” (NILF). It’s a peaceful and effective way to be ‘pack leader’. I’ll add a link or two below. Good luck.
