How do you tell if a dog has anxiety, not just seperation?

I have a 7 month old beagle and he has seperation anxiety. We put him in a cage when we leave and he barks the whole time(we even recorded him, to make sure). He also can’t lay down anywhere in the living room unless he is laying with myself or my husband. I think he has anxiety in general, if thats possible. He even goes to classes at PetSmart but he doesn’t do anything he is taught because he’s worried about the other dogs. He does everything we learn great when we’re at home, though. I don’t know what to do and I don’t know if anxiety can affect a dog like it can a human.

One of my breed books does say that some Beagles are prone to being timid and don’t like to be left alone. However, some dogs do have separation anxiety. If your dog is timid and you leave, they worry that the “alpha dog” has left and no one will protect him.

Plus, he is entering his puppy teenage years and all sorts of hormonal things are going on, including being scared some days, brave others, trying to be dominant, being a follower. So it’s hard to get a good read on your dog.

I’m sending you a link on leaving your dog alone. One thing that worked great for me was getting one of the “interactive” toys that are out there. The simplest one is to get a hollowed out dog safe bone (from PetSmart) and putting peanut butter in it. Dogs lick that bone for hours and don’t even know you’re gone. There are other toys like Kongs that you can put biscuits or other treats in and your dog has to work at it to get it out so he stays busy while you’re gone.
