How to exercise a papillion puppy?
We just got an 8 week old Papillion puppy and want him to be happy and healthy. When we were looking at the different breeds we knew we wanted a smaller dog since we have an apartment so it’s not like there is a big backyard to have him run around in. But my husband and I are outdoor loving people and we knew we would be more than willing to take our puppy/dog on 2 or 3 good walks everyday.
But our little papillion pup is taking a great deal of training to walk on a leash, so our walks are very productive at providing exercise at this point, because it’s only a few steps at a time, with lots of praising and sitting and calling in-between.
I want the puppy to be well taken care of, so what are some other things that we can do in the house until his walks are providing the outlet he needs? Is there a particular game or toy that we can play with him to make sure he is getting enough energy released and exercise everyday?
I would invest in a toy that dispenses treats – obviously this would be an in-frequent toy and very few treats should be used, but they work great as chase toys AND mental stimulation. I got a ball for my dog that i put 5-10 small hard treats in per day and it takes her a good hour to chase it around and get the treats.
You could also take one or two small SMELLY treats and “hide” them in easy places. Lead the pup around to “find” them. My dog loves it (i moved to putting the treats outside in the snow and she burrows around to find them.)
Again, when using the treats use as few as possible.
Other options include the pup finding YOU, playing fetch, etc.
